The King's Return: Jazz vs. Lakers Hype Hits Peak Volume
The biggest story heading into the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Lakers game tonight is simple: LeBron James is back, or at least he’s questionable and on the very edge of his season debut. After missing the first 14 games with sciatica, the buzz is palpable; he completed multiple 5-on-5 sessions this week, getting reassigned from the G League back to the big club. If he plays, he becomes the first guy in NBA history to suit up for 23 seasons, which is just insane.
The Lakers, surprisingly, are already 10-4 without him, which is a credit to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves carrying an immense offensive load. Reaves, especially, has been a stud, and the chatter is all about how James' return will impact his role. Shaq even threw out a warning, saying Reaves might be "back in the corner again," which is a classic, slightly harsh, Big Aristotle take.
Lakers coach JJ Redick is playing it cool, saying you can’t predict if the integration will be seamless or choppy. It has to be a little choppy, right? You're adding a superstar who plays for 35 minutes a night to a rotation that has been going well. You also have the whole dynamic of LeBron and Luka being on the court together, two guys who always have the ball. Who will sit in the corner? People are arguing about that.
On the Utah side, they are riding a wave of offensive craziness, which is the exact opposite of how they usually play. Lauri Markkanen has been on fire, scoring more than 40 points in two games in a row, including a huge 47-point game in a double-OT thriller against the Bulls. They’re scoring over 150 points in some of these games.
The Jazz are banged up though, with Walker Kessler officially out and a couple of other rotational guys questionable. Markkanen and Keyonte George will have to be absolute flamethrowers to hang with a Lakers team getting its heart and soul back, even if it’s on a minutes restriction.
LeBron's Impact on the Line
The Lakers are huge 12-point favorites at home, and the over/under is set at a crazy high 238.5 points. It's clear that Vegas thinks two things: the Lakers are good and the Jazz don't play any defense right now. The 12-point spread is big, but it's not surprising for a road team to be up against a healthy top-five team in the Western Conference. LeBron is going to be excited, and the crowd will be too.
They will feed him the ball, but the Lakers also have the league's 7th-best defensive rating, a unit that should be able to slow down Utah’s scoring spree more than most. The Lakers win, but the 12-point spread is a monster for a guy playing his first game, no matter how great he is. The Jazz have enough offense in Markkanen to keep it interesting. I'll take the Jazz to cover, but the Lakers to win straight up. The over is a trap, with the Lakers’ defense and a probable early-season rest for LeBron keeping the total under 238.5.
