San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Week 9 NFL Picks and Parlays

Reeling Niners Head to a Heartbroken New York

The upcoming game between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants just got dark. The 49ers are supposed to be Super Bowl contenders. Instead, they just got punched in the mouth by the Houston Texans, and now they're 5-3. Brock Purdy didn't play (toe injury), and the offense looked lost. Ricky Pearsall was out. Fred Warner is on IR. This team is hurting. They need a "get right" game in the worst way.

You'd think a 2-6 Giants team would be the perfect medicine. Not this time.

If you thought the Niners felt bad, the vibe in New York is funereal. The entire Giants season exploded yesterday in Philly when their rookie sensation, running back Cam Skattebo, had his ankle dislocated on a gruesome play. The guy was having a monster rookie year, leading all rookies in scrimmage yards, and was the only thing working for that offense. Now he's out for the season.

This comes just a month after they lost their other rookie stud, Malik Nabers, for the year. It's just brutal.

So what's this Sunday's game look like? It's a "who's more desperate" bowl. The Niners, who may or may not have Purdy, stutter into MetLife against a Giants squad that has absolutely nothing left to lose. They simply had their heart torn out. They're starting a rookie QB in Jaxson Dart, but their backfield will come back to life with Tyrone Tracy Jr. in for Skattebo.

This is a traditional trap game. On paper, the Niners are far superior. However, they are injured and up against a team that is motivated only by resentment and emotion. This could get ugly if the 49ers' defense, which is without Warner, is unable to stop the run. This isn't just a must-win for Kyle Shanahan; it's a "don't-lose-to-a-zombie-team" game.

Early on, oddsmakers like his chances, too. The Niners are sitting on a line of -150, slightly out in front of the ailing Giants on a 2.5-point spread. San Fran needs to get some reps in this week and figure out how to compensate for their injuries in order to escape with a win.
