The Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders are set to clash on Christmas Day, though neither team exactly has a bow on their season. This NFC East showdown used to be the kind of late-season matchup with massive playoff stakes, but 2025 has been a cruel mistress for both franchises. Dallas was officially bounced from the postseason hunt after the Eagles took care of business against these very Commanders last week. 

For the Cowboys, it’s a bizarre feeling. Dak Prescott has been dealing, and that offseason George Pickens addition looked like a masterstroke, yet the defense has been a sieve. Even after Jerry Jones pulled the trigger on those November trades for Quinnen Williams and Logan Wilson, the unit just couldn’t get off the field when it mattered most.

Washington isn't faring any better. Their rookie sensation Jayden Daniels is already shut down for the year, and the quarterback room is basically a revolving door at this point. Marcus Mariota is currently a massive question mark for Thursday after mangling his hand and quad in the loss to Philly. If he can’t go, we’re looking at journeyman Josh Johnson under center. To make matters worse, the Commanders just lost cornerstone guard Sam Cosmi to IR with a concussion. It’s a mess. Both of these teams are playing for pride and maybe some job security for 2026.

The Cowboys are currently 6.5-point favorites, and honestly, that feels low if Washington is forced to start Johnson or the newly signed Jeff Driskel. Dallas still has the firepower to put up points, and after Brandon Aubrey’s weird two-miss performance against the Vikings, you’ve got to think he bounces back. 

I’m taking the Cowboys to cover the -6.5. Washington’s offensive line is decimated, and they won't be able to keep up in a shootout. Prediction: Cowboys win against a defeated Commanders squad.
