Bear Down on the Trade Block: Giants' Coughlin and Poles' Edge Rush Gamble

Soldier Field is going to be a dirty place come Sunday, and I am not just talking about the weather conditions. This is gonna be a real down-in-the-dirt showdown between the Giants and the Bears because both teams will be scrapping for a shred of dignity in this contest. First off, you've got a nod to a legend in his own right, as former Giants coach Tom Coughlin is a semifinalist for the Class of 2026 Football Hall of Fame.

Two Super Bowl rings, and both of them absolute heart-stoppers against the Patriots dynasty. That guy’s intensity is still talked about in awe, and it’s a wonderful reminder of his winning environment that was created in New York. The Giants could use a bit of that same hard-nosed toughness in their current situation.

Currently, though, it appears that the Bears’ front office is rearranging deck furniture after the trade deadline, and it’s a clear demonstration that GM Ryan Poles is definitely not resting on his laurels. This is because just a few days ago, it was announced that the Bears have consummated a trade involving defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, in which they shipped off a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Browns in exchange for Joe-T-S and a seventh-round draft pick. This is Poles in a nutshell—buying low in a player who originally was a first-round pick (32nd overall in 2021) but hasn’t been living up to expectations.

They needed edge rush help, especially with Dayo Odeyingbo recently going on IR. This is a crucial, no-risk gamble to try and bolster that pass rush now, for this very game against the Giants. New York's offensive line has been… well, let's just say a revolving door, so seeing how Tryon-Shoyinka is deployed immediately is key. If he can get any kind of pressure, it's going to be a long day for the Giants' quarterback. It's an instant upgrade, a fresh body, and a clear signal that the Bears are still trying to win this season. Keep an eye on the trenches—that's where this one will be decided.

I like the Bears for this one, and they're getting 3 ½ points to make something happen. I also expect a low-scoring affair that comes in below the 47 ½-point Over/Under. Both of these teams played to the Under last season, finishing in the bottom five in the league. While they're better this season, there's nothing in the charts to anticipate a big game.
