The UFC uses weight classes and divisions that differ from boxing, wrestling, and other combat sports. It can be difficult to keep track of, especially with both men and women competing in this famed mixed-martial-arts league. Some of the titles are vacant at any given moment, and fighters often move between UFC weight classes, making it even harder to understand.
Here’s everything you need to know about UFC divisions and weight classes.
MMA weight classes weren’t initially required, because the competitions weren’t legally sanctioned by state fighting commissions. The first UFC events were what’s called a Catchweight tournament, where fighters of all sizes and disciplines were fighting each other. Nobody knew what to expect, but the first UFC fight ever set the stage for what to come.
At 6’5” tall and weighing 217 pounds, Dutch Savate expert Gerard Gordeau squared off against 415-pound sumo wrestling expert Teila Tuli. This 198-pound weight difference remains one of the biggest weight gaps in sports. In fact, 200 pounds would become the interim weight limit at UFC 12, with fighters divided evenly at that line.
By 2005, states across the country started officially recognizing MMA and UFC as legitimate combat sports, integrating everything into one streamlined system of divisions.
The Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts designates fourteen different weight classes, four of which were added in the summer of 2017. The divisions are as follows:
Strawweight fighters weigh up to 115 pounds. There are both men and women divisions in this weight class.
Flyweight fighters weigh between 115 and 125 pounds. There are both men and women divisions in this weight class.
Bantamweight fighters weigh between 125 and 135 pounds. There are both men and women divisions in this weight class.
Featherweight fighters weigh between 135 and 145 pounds. There are both men and women divisions in this weight class.
Lightweight fighters weigh between 145 and 155 pounds.
Super Lightweight fighters weigh between 155 and 165 pounds.
Welterweight fighters weigh between 165 and 170 pounds.
Super Welterweight fighters weigh between 170 and 175 pounds.
Middleweight fighters weigh between 175 and 185 pounds.
Super Middleweight fighters weigh between 185 and 195 pounds.
Super Middleweight fighters weigh between 185 and 195 pounds.
Fighters are both weighed the day before and the day of the fight. It happens once during in the morning and once the evening as the fight card is starting. It keeps both fighters honest and stops them from cutting weight only to balloon up during the actual fight. You are only allowed a one-pound margin of error to make your division weight.
The first weigh-in is the only one with an actual weight. The second is ceremonial only and acts as a photo op for fans.
That's all you need to know about MMA and UFC divisions and weigh-ins. Enjoy your next fight knowing exactly what you're looking at.

Something so simple, but few people actually do this. Compare the odds being offered for sportsbooks. This indicates the probability of your selection being a winner or not. Let's assume that during the weekend you want to bet on the Perth Glory and Central Coast Mariners match, where Perth are the favorites. In this case, the most reliable prediction will be a Perth win as they are a stronger team. The odds of a Perth victory are therefore greater than those of Central Coast. In this context, if the odds offered by sportsbooks are +315 for a Central Coast victory compared to -135 for a Perth win, then placing a bet on Central Coast to win isn’t the expected result. Do not forget to analyze the probabilities before placing your soccer bet.
The first thing to know is that motivation greatly influences the performance of a soccer club. The importance of a match (perhaps a win is required to qualify for the Champions League or to avoid relegation to the Championship or League One) or the amount of the premium of match are for example key factors of the motivation of a soccer team.
But the performance of the team can also be influenced by other elements. What if an important player is suspended for the game or a new signing has been made? It may be a major player has off-the field problems that might affect his game. These potentially important elements can possibly have a great influence on how the whole team plays. When we know that the difference in motivation between two teams often makes the difference in a soccer match, we understand that this criterion is the most important in the success of a prediction. At the end of the season, for example, it is not uncommon to see a Premier League club with little to play for being held in check by a team that is in a relegation battle.
The motivation that a side has to win and a positive state of mind is often decisive. Take the example of national cup competitions: these are big matches for the lesser teams and they will be highly motivated to get a win, especially against a team from a higher league. This is where upsets happen. We see the same happening in other tournaments such as the World Cup or European Championships where traditionally weaker countries produce impressive performances in the final phases. The state of mind of the team can be seen in the statements of the players, the coach or the owners, and shareholders of a soccer club. Announcements like the appointment of a new coach can also have an effect on the short-term performance of the team. A change in the coach desired by the players will tend to bring the team together and improve their performance in the matches following the appointment.
After analyzing the motivation of the teams, do not hesitate to keep up to date with the latest soccer news before placing your bets. The best practice will always be to bet at the last moment. Injuries, suspensions, and the decision to rest players during a tight playing schedule can have a great influence on the result of the match. Don’t forget that this can be even more influential on the match result if a club lacks depth in their squad. It’s important to analyze how some teams play if missing vital players as this may well indicate how a game will end up.
It will also be important for you to consider the current state of the team you are betting on. It is important to look at how teams play at home and the results they get in away games. Warning: A series of victories against very weak teams is not necessarily a sign of good form! If Real Madrid beat Espanyol 6-0, but before that had three losses against Barça, Atletico, and Valencia, you know they are quite inconsistent (which is good to know).
Here’s our final piece of advice from our soccer specialists: Take into account the statistics of each team in your forecasts. Some teams are traditionally strong at home and others get cover the spread when away. Teams with limited numbers of top-class players often experience difficulties in the middle of the league season, especially when they are also engaged in the Europa League or Champions League.
The history of previous meetings between the two teams is also something important to consider. It may be that they struggle to cope with their opponents’ style of play. Sometimes certain teams just have the other’s number. So, even though the numbers may have changed completely since their last meeting, the unique atmosphere that prevails around certain team remains the same year after year and often influences the result. It’s common in rivalry matches and the popular saying is that “you can throw out the records.” This will be the case, for example, in games between sides such as Lyon-Saint Etienne, Milan-Inter, Arsenal-Tottenham and Manchester United-Manchester City. Keep this tip in mind before betting on soccer.
