How to Play Online Blackjack

Most people think that online blackjack is just a game of chance, but it's so much more than that. This is a game where you need to use your skills and make the right choices at the right time. Sure, there's an element of luck involved, but this is also a game of strategy. Have you got what it takes?

What You Need to Know

Blackjack is a lot easier than it sounds. Basically, you play against the dealer — the person who draws the cards. You win against the dealer in the following scenarios:

  • You get 21 points using your first two cards (without the dealer getting 21 points first). This is called a "blackjack."
  • You get a score that's higher than the dealer without reaching 21.
  • The dealer reaches a score that's higher than 21.

In online blackjack, each card has a numerical value. With the number cards, you already know the value — 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on. Face cards — Jacks, Queens, Kings — have a value of 10. Ace cards usually have a value of 11, unless you go over 21.

For example, a 10 card and an Ace card would equal 21. Remember, the winner of the game is the person who has a hand of cards that equal 21 or the person who gets closest to 21. (It's called a "push" if it's a tie and nobody wins.) Get over 21, and it's over!

There are two terms you need to know about in blackjack: Hit and Stand. Hit means the dealer draws you another card. You can keep asking for cards until you exceed 21. Stand means you keep your hand of cards and do nothing.

There are some blackjack cheats you should know about, too:

Double down: When you double your bet and get just one more card.

Split: If you make two hands from your card, you win double the amount of money. For example, if you stand with two hands of Jacks and Queens.

Take insurance: When the dealer draws an Ace, you can place a bet that will pay you at 2-1 if the dealer gets a score of 21 with one more card (a "blackjack").
