Beginner's Guide to NHL Hockey Betting at YouWager

The NHL has a huge following throughout North America. Betting seems like a natural inclination, especially when fans wish to show extra support and solidarity for their fave team.

Hockey betting limits are much lower compared to those of more popular sports such as basketball and football. This may provide a less stressful betting environment. However, this isn’t to say that it is easy. Not by a long shot. We’ve summed up some essential information to consider before you invest in a game that is determined by myriad factors and a fair share of randomness (since the game is played while skating on ice).

Money Line

The most straightforward form of NHL betting. Money line bets do not consider the margins in a scoreboard breakdown. Essentially, bettors choose their winning team, which is either the underdog or favorite in the game.

Favorites are represented with a “-” sign while a “+” represents the underdog. A typical NHL odds would look something like this:

Calgary +115

Vancouver -120

This means that bettors supporting the Calgary Flames need to bet $100 to win $115. In contrast, bettors who place their money on Vancouver Canucks will have to place a $120 bet to win $100.

The odds between underdogs and favorites are usually kept within the 20-cent line (referring to the bet value).

However, matches that involve extremely popular favorites will usually exceed the 20-cent line. So it is important to conduct some research to understand more about the history of a team before making your bets!

Additionally, some oddsmakers may combine money lines with Over/Under bets (which we will cover in the next session), requiring bettors to raise the price of their bets.

Founded in 1877, Wimbledon has grown to be one of the biggest sports events of the year and is the championship game of tennis. Therefore, it is not surprising that Wimbledon is the biggest betting event when it comes to tennis. There are five main events in Wimbledon, gentlemen’s singles, ladies singles, gentlemen’s doubles, ladies’ doubles, and mixed doubles.

O/U, Over/Under, Total

A betting style that considers the score margin of a match, specifically the total goals. In the O/U betting system, oddsmakers will decide on a set total number of goals in a match, typically between 5 - 6.5. Bettors can then choose to go greater or lower than the posted score.

If both teams offer the same odds for an expected 5 goals, the arrangement is considered a 5-flat bet. However, if the bet differs in odds for each team, they’re either a 5-Under or 5-Over. Since the amount of goals in hockey are usually less varied than other major sports such as football, oddsmakers are more likely to change the amount of odds in a bet than the total goals.

Puck Line

The puck line is often compared to the run line in baseball bets. This betting system refers to betting on a 1.5 goal average on a favorite or underdog team.

A typical bet may be something like this:

Toronto +1.5 (- 200)

Detroit -1.5 (+220)

Bettors place a bet of $200 to win $100 if Toronto wins or loses by one goal. Betting on the Detroit (underdog) is set at $100 to win $220 if Detroit wins by two or more goals.

Grand Salami

Finally, we have the grand salami betting option, a unique arrangement for the NHL offered by some sportsbooks. Grand Salami provides bettors with the unique opportunity to predict the total number of goals scored in every game on a specific day via a single bet.

Most people think that online blackjack is just a game of chance, but it's so much more than that. This is a game where you need to use your skills and make the right choices at the right time. Sure, there's an element of luck involved, but this is also a game of strategy. Have you got what it takes?

Blackjack is a lot easier than it sounds. Basically, you play against the dealer — the person who draws the cards. You win against the dealer in the following scenarios:

  • You get 21 points using your first two cards (without the dealer getting 21 points first). This is called a "blackjack."
  • You get a score that's higher than the dealer without reaching 21.
  • The dealer reaches a score that's higher than 21.

In online blackjack, each card has a numerical value. With the number cards, you already know the value — 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on. Face cards — Jacks, Queens, Kings — have a value of 10. Ace cards usually have a value of 11, unless you go over 21.

For example, a 10 card and an Ace card would equal 21. Remember, the winner of the game is the person who has a hand of cards that equal 21 or the person who gets closest to 21. (It's called a "push" if it's a tie and nobody wins.) Get over 21, and it's over!

There are two terms you need to know about in blackjack: Hit and Stand. Hit means the dealer draws you another card. You can keep asking for cards until you exceed 21. Stand means you keep your hand of cards and do nothing.

There are some blackjack cheats you should know about, too:

Double down: When you double your bet and get just one more card.

Split: If you make two hands from your card, you win double the amount of money. For example, if you stand with two hands of Jacks and Queens.

Take insurance: When the dealer draws an Ace, you can place a bet that will pay you at 2-1 if the dealer gets a score of 21 with one more card (a "blackjack").
